Mission Statement
Our Mission & Vision
Our Mission
To promote equality, dignity, and well-being by providing
high-quality, accessible advice and support to ethnic minority
communities across Edinburgh and the Lothians.
We strive to empower individuals to make informed decisions,
claim their rights, and live independently and confidently in
Scotland.
Our Vision
A fair and inclusive society where people from all ethnic backgrounds are respected, supported, and empowered to achieve their full potential—free from discrimination, disadvantage, or social exclusion.
Chairman's Statement
It is with great pride and commitment that I welcome you to the
Ethnic Minorities Advice Centre (EMAC). As Chairman of the Board, I
am honoured to lead an organisation dedicated to empowering and
supporting individuals and families from ethnic minority communities
across Edinburgh, Midlothian, and East Lothian.
EMAC was founded on the belief that every individual, regardless of
background, deserves equal access to advice, resources, and
opportunities to thrive. Through our dedicated team, we provide
essential support in welfare rights, income maximisation, debt
advice, housing, and signposting to key community
services.
In today’s climate, the challenges faced by ethnic minority
communities can be complex and overwhelming. Our role at EMAC is to
ensure that no one faces those challenges alone. We are committed to
fairness, dignity, and respect in every service we
provide.
I extend my sincere gratitude to our volunteers, staff, supporters,
and partners who make our mission possible. Together, we are
building a more inclusive and equitable society where every voice is
heard and every person has a chance to succeed.
We look forward to continuing this vital work and invite you to be
part of our journey—whether as a service user, volunteer, partner,
or funder. Your support makes a real difference.
Warm regards,
Rahat Hasan Chowdhury
Chairman, EMAC Board
Founder's Statement
As the founder of the Ethnic Minorities Advice Centre (EMAC), I am
proud to be part of an organisation that stands as a voice and
support system for those who are often unheard and underserved. EMAC
was born out of a deep commitment to social justice, equality, and
empowerment for ethnic minority individuals and families across
Edinburgh, Midlothian, and East Lothian.
Having worked in the legal, third sector, and welfare advice sectors,
I have witnessed firsthand the barriers many people face when trying
to access basic services, secure their rights, or find someone who
truly understands their experiences. EMAC was established to bridge
that gap — to ensure that no one feels left behind due to language,
culture, or circumstance.
Our aim is simple but vital: to provide free, confidential, and
culturally-sensitive advice and support to help people live with
dignity and confidence in Scotland. Whether it’s navigating the
welfare system, dealing with housing or debt, or being signposted to
the right services — EMAC is here to stand with our communities.
We are still growing, learning, and adapting. But at our heart
remains a firm belief:
everyone deserves to be treated with respect, supported with
compassion, and given the tools to thrive.
Thank you for supporting our journey.
Warm regards,
Qazi Md Yousuf
Founder & Welfare Adviser
